UN, IAEA must defend rights of member countries

Sobhani-Nia on Friday assessed as “positive” remarks by UN nuclear chief Yukiya Amano about the IAEA’s readiness to hold negotiations with Iran in the “near future” and said that such an approach would certainly enhance the body’s prestige in the international scene.

"Undoubtedly, the pursuit of the policy of negotiations to resolve Iran's nuclear (energy) issue by bodies such as the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency will not only be a move to maintain their independence but will lead to the enhancement of their prestige in the international scene,” he added.

The legislator emphasized that the UN and its affiliated organizations have always been affected by the US foreign policy, saying this is the reason behind the inconsistent behaviors by the UN or the IAEA towards Iran's nuclear energy issue.

As an international body, it is expected that the IAEA will make use of its provisions to establish global peace and security, Sobhani-Nia pointed out.
