Majlis votes to halt 2nd phase of subsidy reform plan

One hundred seventy-nine MPs voted in favor of halting the second phase of the subsidy reform plan during a parliament session on Sunday, in which 242 MPs were present. There were 17 votes against and 20 abstentions on the bill.

The chairman of the on Budgeting and Planning Commission of Iran's Majlis, Gholamreza Mesbahi Moqaddam, told ICANA that the Iranian people will still be paid their subsidies as before.

“Subsidy payments will continue like last year and the current year and the suspension of the second phase of the subsidy reform plan does not mean a halt on the cash handouts that people receive,” he said.

It is not clear when the decision to halt the plan is due to take effect.

Mesbahi Moqaddam added the second phase of the subsidy reform plan should be suspended, noting that the government and the parliament should collaborate in the procedure to implement the bill but no certain time can be specified to put the decision in practice.
