NATO interference in regional conflicts sparks new fires

"We have made fully explicit statements about the Patriot missiles which were due to be deployed at the (Turkish) border with Syria. NATO's involvement in regional conflicts sparks new fire and does not resolve the problem," Larijani said at a press conference here in Tehran on Monday.

Turkey declared late November that it plans to ask the NATO to deploy Patriot missiles along the country's border with Syria.

A few days later, Larijani paid a visit to Ankara, where he expressed strong concern about the possible deployment of the surface-to-air Patriot missiles along the Turkish border with Syria, saying it will cause more problems in the region.

Patriot is a long-range, all-weather and all-altitude system designed to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft.

Turkey had also earlier voiced agreement with the deployment of an early warning system for NATO's planned missile shield on its soil.
