Tehran, May 27, (ICANA) – Member of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hojatollah Souri says EU foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton tried to find out more about the political settings and the status quo in Iran's presidential election during her recent talks with Iran's chief negotiator Saeed Jalili in Istanbul.

Ashton sought to realize election settings in Iran during Istanbul talks

Souri questioned the seriousness of Ashton in her previous round of talks with Jalili in Istanbul Turkey, and said she was not in Istanbul to discuss Iran's nuclear issue.

"Firstly, Ashton wanted to realize Iran's election mechanism and know the electoral process in Iran instead of discussing nuclear issues and responding to the questions raised before," Souri stated.

"Secondly, she wanted to know the election setting and candidates," Souri added.

Stating that the six world powers are apparently waiting for election results in Iran to calculate their next steps, Souri called on the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus German) to avoid killing time in the talks with Iran, and stressed that the upcoming presidential election will not influence the country's nuclear policies and stance.

Jalili had a round of bilateral talks with Ashton, who presides over the delegations of the world powers in nuclear talks with Iran, in Istanbul on May 15.
