Islamic Consultative Assembly News Agency – "Politicians have two passports, political and ordinary; if someone travels to somewhere by his\her ordinary passport and without any political purpose, there will be no legal prohibition", states Abulfazl Abutorabi referring to one of the US senator's travel to Iran.

The principalist MP representing NajafAbad, Tiran and Koroon electoral district in the Iranian Parliament says: If a senator arriving to Iran declares and emphasizes that his travel is personal and touristic, there is no ban to the person; anyway supervision on foreigners arriving to Iran is regarding to security supervisor institutions.

There are no formal diplomatic relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America. Because the two nations currently do not have direct diplomatic relations, instead of exchanging ambassadors, Iran maintains an interests section at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, D.C., while the United States has maintained a corresponding interests section at the Swiss Embassy in Tehran (since 1980).
