MP: US to lose ICJ's case over Iran frozen assets

Spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran's Majlis, Seyyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said according to the nuclear accord, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the western countries should reconsider their hostile behavior towards Iran.

He reiterated that the US is stealing the Iranian national assets against the spirit of the JCPOA inked between Iran and the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany.

Commenting on the Iran's lawsuit against the United States at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) demanding compensation over the seizure of two billion dollars worth of the country's assets, he added the American would lose the court case.

Naqavi Hosseini underlined that the move would play a pivotal role for paying back the national assets of the country.

On June 15, 2016, President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran had filed the lawsuit with the ICJ, vowing that his administration will pursue the case to its end.

On April 20, the US Supreme Court ruled that about two billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets must be turned over to American families of people killed in the 1983 bombing of a US Marine Corps barracks in the Lebanese capital of Beirut and other attacks blamed on Iran. Tehran has long rejected allegations of involvement in the 1983 Beirut bombing.

Iran has denied any role in the attack, and the money confiscated under the US court ruling belongs to the Central Bank of Iran (CBI). The assets have been blocked under US sanctions.
