Ottawa criticized for not adopting procedures yet in place for Iranians to go to polls in Canada

Talking to ICANA, Mohammad-Javad Abtahi underscored that the Ottawa move run counter to the international law.

From the perspective of international law, a citizen of any country has the right to intervene in the destiny of their country, the lawmaker said.

Countries should not intervene in the domestic affairs of any other state, the MP said, underlying that even a single vote could affect a country's political changes.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif recentrly announced that the necessary measures have not yet been adopted in Canada to let Iranians living in that country take part in the upcoming presidential elections.

Zarif said a political Canadian delegation has recently traveled to Tehran to have discussions on holding presidential elections for Iranians in Canada.

Touching upon his talks over phone with his Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland, Zarif said according to Canadian laws, casting votes should be held at diplomatic centers.

He added that Ottawa severed its political relations with Tehran during the previous Iranian government and Iran does not have diplomatic presence in Canada.

Zarif said his Canadian counterpart told him that she would like to see Iranians in Canada to take part in the elections but needed procedures have not been set in place.
