Foreign Ministry urged to pursue case of Iranian fishermen imprisoned by Somali pirates

Tehran, June 4, ICANA – An Iranian lawmaker urged the Foreign Ministry to pursue the case of the Iranian fishermen still held captive by the Somali pirates.

Qasem Jasemi made the remarks in an interview with ICANA.

The lawmaker underlined that this case is not so sophisticated and should be followed up as soon as possible.  

He added the Iranian government should negotiate with the Somalia, expressing hope that  the Iranian fishermen could be freed as soon as possible.   

On May 29, Foreign Ministry spokesman said the case of the Iranian fishermen still held captive by the Somali pirates is being investigated by several Iranian government bodies.

Bahram Qasemi said at least 37 Iranian fishermen were held captive by Somali pirates in 2015.

He added several of them managed to escape, some died and eight of them are still captured by Somali pirates.

Qasemi reiterated that the case is still open and is being followed up by various Iranian organizations.
