MP calls for pursuing case of Iranian fishermen jailed by Somali pirates

Tehran, June 4, ICANA – An Iranian lawmaker emphasized the need for pursuing the case of the Iranian fishermen still held captive by the Somali pirates.

Shahrouz Barzegar Golshani a member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission made the remarks in an interview with ICANA.

He added for sure Iran’s Foreign Ministry is obliged to safeguard the rights of Iranian citizens abroad.

He added the pirates are stationed in several regions across the world, Somalia in particular, adding that Mogadishu should be held accountable in this respect.

 The MP reiterated that so far Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has reviewed this case in several sessions, adding the Naval forces also are pursuing the case seriously.

On May 29, Foreign Ministry spokesman said the case of the Iranian fishermen still held captive by the Somali pirates is being investigated by several Iranian government bodies.

Bahram Qasemi said at least 37 Iranian fishermen were held captive by Somali pirates in 2015.

He added several of them managed to escape, some died and eight of them are still captured by Somali pirates.

Qasemi reiterated that the case is still open and is being followed up by various Iranian organizations.
