MP: Iran Sanctions Affect Europe Economy

Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, who was speaking at the end of his three-day official visit to Italy, said that Iran has a positive view about Italy's joining the P5+1 because the Iranian officials believe that Rome can play a more active role in the P5+1 -- the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. “Economic and trade cooperation, joint fight against terrorism and drug trafficking can be areas of cooperation between Iran and Italy,” IRIB quoted Boroujerdi as saying on Friday. Boroujerdi met with Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, chairmen and members of foreign commissions of Italy's both houses of parliament during his three-day visit to Italy. On June 9, 2010, the UN ratified a US-engineered resolution imposing new sanctions against Iran over allegations that that the country is pursuing a military nuclear program. Tehran has refuted the Western allegations, saying it needs nuclear energy to meet its growing domestic demand for electricity. Iran argues that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has the right to enrich uranium to produce fuel.
