Moroccans Seek Limits on King’s Powers

Thousands of protesters have gathered in the Moroccan capital to demand the King give up some of his powers and clamp down on corruption in the government.

Protesters also want the monarch to dismiss the government and dissolve parliament.

The protest was initiated by a group calling itself the February 20 Movement for Change. Tens of thousands of people already voiced support for the rallies.

Human rights and civil groups as well as independent journalists have joined the movement.

They are demanding constitutional reforms that would reduce King Mohammed's powers and make the justice system more independent.

In an attempt to head off serious unrest, the Moroccan government has promised to boost subsidies for staples, which had sharply risen in price in recent months.

The developments come as popular uprisings continue to sweep the US-backed autocratic regimes across the Middle Eastern and North Africa.
