Kosovo: New Parliament Sworn in after December Election

Hashim Thaci, who led Kosovo's contested secession from Serbia in 2008, is expected to be re-elected by the 120 members of parliament as prime minister, Kosovo's top office, AKI reported. Thaci has secured a 65 seat majority in the parliament in coalition with minorities’ parties and the Alliance for New Kosovo headed by Swiss-based businessman Bedzet Pacoli. In exchange for his support, Thaci has promised Pacoli Kosovo's presidency. But a crucial ten of out 34 deputies from his Democratic Party of Kosovo may not vote for Pacoli, which would make his election virtually possible, according to media reports. The candidacy of 75-year-old intellectual Adem Demaci has been backed by 53 deputies from the main opposition parties - the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo, the Alliance for the future of Kosovo and Vetevendosje (Self-determination). Demaci could win the presidency he if captures the votes of eight deputies from the minorities’ parties or from rebels from Thaci's party. It was not immediately clear if Pacoli would withdraw his support for Thaci should Demaci become president, triggering fresh elections.
