UK MPs to Face 'Recall' over Wrongdoing

Based on the current rules, MPs will be expelled from the parliament only if they are given prison terms of more than 12 months.

But the coalition is planning to enable voters to “recall” their MP over any criminal conviction.

The recalling will be possible on the formal request of only 10 percent of the electorate in the MP's constituency.

Clegg added the coalition government will “shortly” release the details of the plan saying in the future any “clear” case of wrongdoing makes the MPs eligible for a recall.

“If you are imprisoned for any period of time it seems to me there is a case for being disqualified,” he told the Commons question time.

“The recall mechanism is for serious wrongdoing. Any prison sentence of any length of time should clearly disqualify MPs,” he said. “The purpose of the recall mechanism is to bear down on serious wrongdoing and give people their chance in their constituency to have their say, rather than waiting for an election to do so.”
