North Korea Convenes Parliament

North Korean state media did not report on the opening of the session of the Supreme People's Assembly or its duration. In September, the elder Kim named his son, Kim Jong Un, who is believed to be in his late 20s, a four-star general and appointed him to high-ranking positions in the ruling Korean Workers' Party.

Officials in South Korea suspect that the parliamentary session could be used for a further transfer of powers from the ailing leader to his son.

'There is a possibility that there could be a personnel reshuffle in a major organization,' Defence Minister Hyun In Taek was quoted as saying by Yonhap.

Kim Jong Un was named his father's deputy in the National Defence Commission, the Stalinist state's most powerful decision-making body, the South Korean Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported earlier this year.
