Lawmakers Pass Bill to Establish UNESCO Center in Tehran

TEHRAN, April 21 (ICANA) – Iranian lawmakers approved a bill to establish a study center in Tehran under the auspices of UNESCO on Wednesday.

An agreement to establish the Regional Research Center for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in West and Central Asia had previously been signed between Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization and UNESCO.

According to the Article 77 of the Iranian Constitution, any agreement between the Iranian government and international organizations must be approved by the Majlis.

The Iranian Majlis approved the bill with 125 votes in favor, 15 against and 12 abstentions.

The proposal for the establishment of the research center had previously been approved by UNESCO’s General Conference.
