IPU Props Iran's Democracy Plan

Following a week-long discussions at the 124th IPU Assembly in Panama City, Panama, the participants agreed to defend the rights of the Middle Eastern and North African countries to determine their own destiny, ISNA reported Thursday.

They also stressed the importance of putting an end to the military intervention in the crisis-hit countries.

According to the resolution, the parliamentary representatives will give priority to initiatives and moves that advocate the popular movements in the Middle East and North Africa.

An Iranian parliamentary delegation, headed by Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, attended the IPU meeting in the Panamanian capital.

The Iranian lawmakers delivered speeches at IPU's specialized committees and elaborated on the Majlis stance vis-à-vis different regional and global developments.

On Wednesday, IPU Secretary General Anders Johnsson called on countries in the Middle East and North Africa to step up political reforms as proposed by many parliaments, including Indonesia, New Zealand, Iran and Venezuela.
