Haitian election officials announced on Wednesday that Martelly had won the presidential elections held on March 20, having defeated the former first lady Mirlande Manigat, dpa reported.

The 50-year-old singer is due to take over from his predecessor Rene Preval, who has been in office since 2006, on May 14.

The announcement of final election results had been due on Saturday April 16 but was delayed

Just hours after he was declared the winner, Martelly tried to rally support through his Twitter account, tweeting "Let's pick up our tools and get to work to clean up our country."

Although Martelly's has called for unity, there have been several violent demonstrations in a number of Haitian cities.

A spokesman for the United Nations police force, which patrols much of Haiti, said demonstrators had set fire to a government building in Belladere in central Haiti.

Protests also took place in Leogane, south of Port-au-Prince, the capital. At least one person is reported to have been killed.

Martelly will take office on May14.
