Pakistan: PC Fails to Reach Consensus on Referring SC’s Decision to Parliament

Meeting of Parliamentary Committee on judge’s appointment chaired by Committee Chairman Senator Nayyar Hussain Bukhari was held here at Parliament House on Friday. The committee meeting was attended by six members out of 8.

The meeting pondered over the Supreme Court decision of rejecting of the government’s review petition, onlinenews.com.pk reported.

Sources said that PML-N had adopted the stance that we should not act in haste to take up the matter of SC decision in the Parliament. First constitution and law should be studied that whether a debate could be held against the SC decision in the parliament or not. While other members were of the stance that Parliamentary Committee has been set up under the constitution and the committee opposed appointment of 6 judges in Lahore and Sindh High Court according to the law.

The superior court had rejected committee recommendations and also disposed of review appeals thus it is imperative that this matter should be debated in the parliament.

Due to varying views the committee failed to reach any decision and thus the meeting concluded inconclusively, sources said.

Talking to media after the meeting Chairman Committee Nayyar Hussain Bukhari said that Parliament committee has received only one line verdict of Supreme Court on review appeal of judge’s appointment.

He further said that not Parliament Committee but the government filed review appeal on judge’s appointment. He further said that the committee would call next meeting after receiving detail verdict of Supreme Court after which we would decide whether we would take the matter up with Parliament or not.

Answering to a question Nayyar Husain said that Supreme Court tried to decrease authorities of Parliament by rejecting Parliament’s recommendations so, open discussion should be held in Parliament over the issue.

Asma Arbab Alamgir, Senator Ishaq Dar, Aftab Shaban Mirani, Ghaus Bux Meher, Sardar Mehtab Khan attended the meeting while Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Senator Sabir Baloch could not attend the meeting.
