PAP Women's Wing Calls for More Women Participation in Parliament

Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Hwee Hua said this at the launch of the Women's Wing's new vision, mission and logo on Saturday, channelnews.asia.com reported.

She said as more women take on leadership positions in work and business, she hopes the trend is reflected in Parliament as well.

In 1996, the number of elected women MPs was at 5 per cent. But this year the number has jumped to 23 per cent, and looks set to keep on growing.

"We have a trend of more and more women in leadership positions, so that tells us that women are (becoming) more capable of contributing to the future of Singapore. And how do we then tap that - that exposure, that ability to contribute at different levels, so hopefully we can move up to 30 or 33 per cent," said Mrs Lim.

When asked about the current contest between PAP's candidate, Tin Pei Ling, and National Solidarity Party's Nicole Seah, Mrs Lim said the constituents will look at how the candidates can contribute.

"If it's the incumbent - what has the incumbent done, and what will the incumbent be capable of doing. I think it really boils down to that," said Mrs Lim.

The Women's Wing will focus on six areas to encourage greater participation of women in social, economic and political areas. These include career-family balance, active ageing, and raising leadership representation.

To help women move forward in these areas, a female MP will be assigned to champion each of the six areas following the General Election.

The party's new vision announced on Saturday is - "Women fully empowered to contribute to the development of Singapore, playing a key role in nation building, economically, socially and politically."
