Larijani: Iran Supports National Unity, Democracy in Iraq

“The Iranian people and government will spare no effort in this regard,” Larijani said in a meeting with the head of Iraqi Fazilat Party, Seyyed Hashem Hashemi.

The enemy has made serious efforts to sow discord between the political parties in Iraq, he noted.

“Maintaining security, integrity and vigilance in the current situation in Iraq is highly important.”

Larijani went on to say that Iraq is lagging behind other countries despite the fact that it is gifted with rich natural resources and workforce, blaming the U.S. occupation of the country for such an underdevelopment.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani pointed to the killing of pro-democracy protestors in Bahrain, saying incidents taking place in the country will ruin the legacy of certain countries.

He added the massacre of people in Bahrain is a scandal for the so-called upholders of human rights.

Hashemi, for his part, said Iran and Iraq share deep cultural and religious affinities and that their interactions will benefit the entire region.

Hashemi said his party has taken serious measures to help Bahrainis in their struggle for democracy and stop the brutal actions by the ruling Al-Khalifa regime.

He also briefed Larijani on his party, saying the Fazilat party attaches great importance to strengthening unity between Iraqi Shiite groups.
