MP: Sports Minister to Be Named Soon

Member of the Parliament (Majlis) majority bloc Vali Esmaili said on Monday that President Ahmadinejad would name his candidate for the country's first minister of sports and youth in two weeks.

Esmaili added that the president would also announce his choice for the newly-merged Social Welfare and Labor Ministry at the same time as the minister of sports and youth.

President Ahmadinejad on Saturday nominated Minister of Cooperatives Mohammad Abbasi as the caretaker for the Ministry of Sports and Youth.

The president said Abbasi would maintain his position as the minister of cooperatives after taking on the role of caretaker of the country's newly-formed ministry.

Hamid Sajjadi, President Ahmadinejad's candidate for the post of Sports and Youth Minister, failed to receive a vote of confidence during an open parliamentary session last Tuesday.

In January, the Majlis voted for the establishment of the Ministry of Sports and Youth.

The ratified proposal was then handed to the government, effectively giving the president three months to appoint a minister to head the newly established ministry.

The Ahmadinejad administration has criticized the legislation in the past, arguing that it imposes further financial costs and responsibilities on the government.

The Sports and Youth ministry will be formed by merging Iran's National Youth Organization and the Physical Education Organization.
