“We are not in a hurry for restoring relations [with Egypt] and we understand the situation in Egypt,” said Chairman of Iran's Majlis (Parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi.

“The parliamentary elections would be held in Egypt in September. So with the new parliament, the relations would be restored in a proper atmosphere,” he said on Tuesday.

On Monday, an Egyptian military source announced that the ruling military council remained committed to holding parliamentary elections in September.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces took power in Egypt following former president Hosni Mubarak's ouster on February 11, when massive protests ended Mubarak's 30-year rule.

The military council has vowed to restore power to a civilian government after legislative elections in September and a presidential vote in November.

The Iranian official said resuming relations with Egypt became practically possible after Mubarak's ouster, whose regime was dependent on the US and Israel.

Boroujerdi also called on the people of Egypt to be aware of “US plots” and establish a government “based on national interests.”

Boroujerdi confirmed that Tehran would definitely open its embassy in Cairo.
