Larijani: Iran Supports Azerbaijan Territorial Integrity

“We believe the will and efforts of regional states would be effective in settling the Karabakh dispute and we hope that there will be more regional efforts to solve problems,” Larijani told Azeri Prime Minister Artur Rasizade.

Rasizadeh, voicing satisfaction with talks with Larijani, thanked Iran for supporting tackling of the Karabakh dispute.

Larijani has already underscored the age-old relations between Tehran and Baku, and announced Iran's eagerness to further promote ties and cooperation with Azerbaijan.

Talking to reporters upon his arrival at Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport Thursday, he said that before the collapse of the former Soviet Union in early 1990s, Iranian and Azeri nations did not have close relationships as they do now.

'However, since the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan and after the collapse of the former Soviet Union in December 1991, the Islamic Republic of Iran was the first country to officially recognize the establishment of the newly-independent Republic of Azerbaijan,' Larijani added.

Referring to the fact that Tehran-Baku relations have been improving during former Azeri President Heydar Aliyev's era, the speaker noted that during President Ilham Aliyev's tenure, the two countries have considerably improved their bilateral ties.
