Iran Denies Arrest of National in Bahrain

On Wednesday, Asharq Al-Awsat daily claimed that Bahrain's high criminal court has sentenced two Iranian nationals to 10 years in prison.

“There is no information about the arrest or trial of an Iranian national in Bahrain,” Mehr News Agency quoted Amir Abdollahian as saying on Wednesday.

Referring to reports about the arrest and trial of another Iranian national in Bahrain in the past, Amir Abdollahian said Tehran immediately asked Manama to arrange a meeting with the detainee and allow him the right to an attorney.

“[However], when Iran's Embassy in Bahrain met the alleged Iranian, it emerged that the said individual does not have Iranian citizenship and that the report was basically false.”

On June 22, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned Bahraini charge d'affaires over illegal restrictions imposed on Iranian nationals in Bahrain, describing it as a violation of international conventions.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also summoned Manama's envoy to Tehran in May over a Bahraini court's decision to sentence an Iranian national to death.
