Iran Signs Six MoUs with Iraq

The documents were signed by Iran's First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi and Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Wednesday.

“The high-ranking Iranian delegation's visit to Iraq relays the message of peace and friendship to all Islamic countries,” IRIBNews quoted Rahimi as saying.

“We are ready to cooperate with Iraq on joint projects in other countries,” Rahimi added.

The MoUs cover fields such as information technology, health and medication and culture.

Maliki said, “Iraq's infrastructures have been destroyed because of past wars and struggles, and we need Iran's presence in our country's reconstruction.”

He welcomed Iran's investments in Iraq, and said, “We believe expanding ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a great country in our neighborhood, has a positive effect on Iraq's political and economic stability.”

Rahimi arrived in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad earlier on Wednesday for a six-day official visit.

Ahead of his trip to Iraq, Rahimi said Tehran is determined to increase the value of trade exchange with Baghdad to USD 20 billion and later to USD 30 billion over two phases in the future.
