Iran Urges Implementation of Join Projects with Iraq

"In addition to having abundant cultural commonalities, Iran and Iraq have two nations who like each other and want to stand on their own feet," Ahmadinejad said on Monday, urging the two countries' statesmen to pave the ground for the further expansion of the bilateral relations between the two Muslim neighboring nations.

He described infrastructural projects, including road construction, railway construction, energy transfer and communications, as proper grounds for bolstering cooperation between the two neighbors.

Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, during the 2003 US invasion of the Muslim country.

Both sides are working on a series of plans to take wide strides in expanding their ties.

Iranian Vice-President Mohammad Reza Rahimi was in Baghdad at the head of a high-ranking delegation on Wednesday and inked several agreements with Iraqi prime minister.

The two countries inked six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to expand cooperation in various sectors such as information technology, health and medication and culture.
