S-300 verdict must not be politicized

A transparent probe into Iran's lawsuit against Russia pertaining to Moscow's refusal to meet its contractual commitments will be a “big test” for the International Court of Arbitration, spokesman for Iran's Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Kazem Jalali told reporters on Tuesday.

He added that international courts are tasked with investigating the legal issues of countries and expressed hope the Paris-based court will not be affected by a political atmosphere, IRNA reported.

The Iranian legislator stated that the decision of the International Court of Arbitration in Paris will determine the “honesty and transparency” of international courts in probing countries' complaints.

Jalali's remarks came after Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Sunday that Russia must fulfill its contractual commitment and deliver the S-300 missile system to Iran as the system is not subject to UN Security Council sanctions.

“The Foreign Ministry has taken political and legal steps in parallel,” he stated.

Under a USD 800-million contract signed in 2007, Russia was required to provide Iran with at least five S-300 air defense systems.

However, Russia has been refusing to deliver the system to Iran under the pretext that the system is covered by the fourth round of US-engineered UN Security Council resolutions against Iran.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a decree in September to prohibit the delivery of the defensive system to Iran.

Iranhas been trying to obtain the sophisticated defense system to improve its deterrence power in reaction to Israeli war rhetoric.

Experts believe the S-300 missile defense system can shield Iranian nuclear sites from any Israeli airstrike.
