US worried about rise of Islamists in Egypt

In an interview with ICANA on Tuesday, Shafiei said, "Washington's main policy regarding the developments in Egypt has been to moderate Islamists' influence in the region which can benefit the US in general."

He further noted that Egypt is experiencing continued unrest due to political disputes between two radical factions, namely the Islamists and the seculars.

The US wants to moderate the rule of Islamists in Egypt and prevent them from gaining more influence in the region," he added.

Shafiei said that this policy will certainly benefit the U.S. and Israel as they are always worried about the rising profile of Islamists in the Arab world.
