Lawmaker criticizes extension of EU sanctions on Iran

Member of Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alireza Rahimi made the remarks in an interview with ICANA.

Touching upon the EU move for extending sanctions against Iran over alleged claims of “human rights violations”, the lawmaker said human rights is among the issues that Iran and the European block are negotiating.

Touching upon the EU request for opening an bureau in Iran, he added Tehran expects the block to take a proper strategic policy regarding the Islamic Republic.

The lawmaker underlined that some certain countries are using the issue of human rights as an ineffective tool for putting pressure on other states.

Pointing to Iran-EU relations following the implementation of the nuclear deal, Rahimi said the US and the Zionist regime are trying to creating a wave of Iranophobia in the world.

Last week, the EU said it had prolonged until April 13, 2018 its travel ban and asset freeze on 82 Iranian people and one entity as well as a ban on the bloc’s exports of certain equipment to Iran.

The EU imposed the restrictions on Iran for the first time in 2011.

The sanctions are unrelated to those over Iran's nuclear program, which were lifted following the implementation of the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
